Xero is a cloud-based, small business and accounting software platform based out of Wellington, New Zealand. When it launched in 2006, it revolutionised the accounting industry and changed the way small business owners looked at their numbers by removing the need for double entry accounting.

Today it has over two million subscribers annually and offices in New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The challenge

It’s 2016 and software isn’t sexy. Nevermind accounting software.

If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Time-poor business owners need a good reason to learn new software and step away from reliable spreadsheets, even if they are a bit square.

The copy and imagery was designed around a concept of small business owners easily engaging with their numbers to identify new growth opportunities. By creating a surrealist environment that blurred the lines between digital product and day-to-day business, we could position Xero as fundamental to the heart of a successful operation.

Find the right talent

Ricky Jackson, a creative florist and Xero customer, was chosen to front the first stage of the campaign because of his product’s tactility and the ability to introduce the idea of growth.
